12 is the median age at which lesbian, gay and bisexual adults first felt they might be something other than heterosexual or straight. Among those who have “come out” to a family member or close friend, 20 is the median age at which they first did so.

“I really have not had to tell anyone. I am usually asked. My parents still do not understand, and it is something that is never discussed with my family.”
— 52 year old gay man

Our interactive data explorer lets you sort through a variety of personal coming-out experiences.

Recommend checking out the data explorer, which lets you filter by age. One of the respondents was 86.

The ashes of the commonest fire are melancholy things, for in them there is an image of death and ruin,—of something that has been bright, and is but dull, cold, dreary dust. - Charles Dickens

Don’t forget Superman, John. He was an immigrant too. All Americans have a connection to immigration, share your story with us.

The U.S.’s current immigration system is byzantine, cruel, and benefits neither American citizens nor anyone else. We need comprehensive immigration reform to bring highly skilled workers into the United States to help our economy grow and to bring security and stability to the lives of immigrants living in the United States today. Nikola Tesla was an immigrant. So were Joseph Pulitzer and Albert Einstein and Igor Stravinsky. Rational, compassionate immigration reform is needed so that the next Teslas and Einsteins are not denied access to educational or entrepreneurial opportunities in the United States. The time has come. - John Green

The Harry Potter Alliance just started this really rad project called Superman is an Immigrant and this is John’s submission! The idea is to share your immigration story by writing it on a paper and taking a picture with it. Check out their tumblr to see more and submit your own!

The biggest book in the world
Standing 1.75 meters tall (almost 6 ft), this is the biggest book you’ll ever read - and the biggest ever produced. It takes six people to carry; flipping the page is like an exercise at the gym. A gift from the Amsterdam professor Johannes Klencke, the so-called Klencke Atlas was made in 1660 for the English King Charles II. The large maps were meant to be cut out and pasted on the wall, which never happened. It is a beautiful book - but definitely unsuitable for taking to the beach this summer.
Pic: Klencke Atlas, kept in the British Library. More about this giant in this newspaper article and this short BBC movie. A British Library online exhibit about Atlases is found here.

It would kind of be a sin not to do a manip based on this one, wouldn’t it?

Chester’s face in the first gif, when he ralizes, just how close Mike is… and all that sweat… and the second gif… and everything else… and I bet they at least once accidentially kissed, when Mike wanted to whisper stuff to Chaz, but dude turned his head around
